My daughter had mastered her balance bike and we were ready to upgrade her. We got this bike for her 4th birthday and removed the training wheels and pedals. We let her use it like a balance bike for one afternoon to get the feel of the new weight. The next day we put the pedals back on (never the training wheels), and she has been pedaling like a pro, never looking back! That's how I would recommend using this bike. It's a great product.
